INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY | September 8th

Today marks International Literacy Day, September 8th, a day dedicated to encouraging and supporting literacy everywhere.  The day highlights the immense importance and value of literacy.

The ability to read and write is crucial not only for individuals but for societies as a whole.  Literacy is often considered a matter of dignity and human rights, and an essential foundation of education.  Remarkably, the ability to read and write even contributes to increased life expectancy.

Despite its undeniable importance, a staggering 775 million people worldwide remain illiterate.  Disappointingly, two-thirds of these illiterate individuals are women.  Furthermore, 155 million children globally are currently out of school, a significant risk factor for illiteracy. The current global literacy rate stands at 82%, and unfortunately, in many countries, this rate has plateaued.

Communities, organizations, and governments around the world celebrate Literacy Day, reflecting on the global literacy challenges and acknowledging the direct link between higher illiteracy rates and increased poverty levels.  The World Literacy Foundation even designates International Literacy Day as the most important day on the calendar.
